How to Clean Silver Jewelry

Let us first note, what are the enemies of shiny silver items, and how to avoid them.

Enemy of Silver:

Tarnish is silver enemy. Silver tarnishes when exposed to air and certain chemicals. Without regular cleaning, you can keep silver tarnish free by follow these general rules of thumb:

NEVER let the silver comes in contact with rubber. This includes coasters, table mats, silver wear holders and elastics. Rubber contains sulfur, which will cause your silver to corrode.

Do not allow the stainless steel cutlery to come into contact with fine silver or silver-plated cutlery. Silver becomes stained by contact with other metals. Avoid cleaning or washing of different metals together in one place.

NOT expose fine silver to foods for long periods of time. Never leave dishes include dishes containing eggs, mayonnaise or mustard. Of sulfur in these foods will corrode the silver.

USE silver prevents stain. The more you use and manage your silverware, the less chance there will be for tarnish to rearmament. So do not hide your good silver away for safekeeping!

Silver Cleaning Solution of your own:

When silver oxidizes, it tarnishes. Stain dips work to repair and remove tarnish from quality silver. Most Commercial dips are used when heavy, dark colored stain can be removed with traditional pasta or the like. Chemical dips are wiped on silver with cotton balls and specialized applicators, and then immersed in a chemical composition of acid and a complexing agent. You can make your own chemical dip by following these instructions: 1 Fill sink or basin with steaming hot water.

2nd Mix 2 tablespoons of salt and 2 tablespoons baking powder in a bowl.

3rd Add mixture to sink in hot water.

4th Dip silver items. Most stain will dissolve. entrust them to stay for up to 10 minutes to get rid of stubborn stains.

5th Rinse well.

6th Dry.

7th Store your silver correctly. Other than frequent cleaning, the best way to preserve your silver is to store it properly. Make sure all pieces are completely dry before it is saved away. For silverware, wrap each piece of tissue paper or anti-tarnish paper. You can also wrap pieces in flannel (special flannels are made just for this purpose). Seal the wrapped Silver pieces in an airtight Plastic bag. Whether you put away your silver in a bag or you put it in a display case, a canister of silica gel placed nearby can help reduce moisture and prevent tarnish. Never store silver where it can contact the rubber, stainless steel or paint.
